What you need to know
What happens at your appointment
Every visit at Dovers is clear and comfortable. Here is exactly what to expect.
Sensitivity Assessment
Your dentist identifies which teeth are sensitive and applies specific stimuli to pinpoint the cause. X-rays may be taken to rule out decay or nerve involvement.
Cause Identification
The underlying cause, whether enamel erosion, gum recession, a cracked tooth, an old restoration, or another factor, is identified precisely. This determines the treatment.
Targeted Treatment
Treatment is applied based on the specific cause: fluoride varnish, bonding over exposed dentine, gum treatment, a new filling or crown over a cracked tooth, or bite adjustment.
Home Care & Prevention
Personalised guidance on toothpaste, brushing technique, diet, and the habits causing sensitivity so treatment results last and it does not return.
Why Lagos patients choose us
Diagnostic First Approach
We diagnose the cause before treating. Two patients with identical sensitivity symptoms may have completely different underlying causes requiring different treatments.
Full Treatment Range In-House
From fluoride varnish to gum treatment to crowns for cracked teeth, all the treatments for sensitivity causes are available at our Lekki clinic without referrals.
Experience with Structural Sensitivity
Gum recession exposing root surfaces and cracked tooth syndrome are complex sensitivity presentations. Our clinicians are experienced in both.
Prevention Education
We help you understand what is causing your enamel to erode or gums to recede and give you the tools to stop it from happening again.
Frequently asked questions
The most common causes include: enamel erosion from acid, gum recession exposing root surfaces, cracked teeth, worn fillings, teeth grinding (bruxism), and tooth whitening. Less commonly, a cavity or abscess.
It reduces sensitivity in some patients with mild enamel erosion but does not treat the underlying cause. If sensitivity has persisted for more than 2 to 3 weeks, a dental assessment is more effective.
Sometimes. Persistent sensitivity to heat can indicate a dying nerve requiring root canal treatment. Sensitivity to cold alone is less alarming but still warrants assessment if it lasts longer than a few seconds.
This depends on the cause. Exposed dentine from gum recession can be treated with bonding or gum grafting for long-lasting relief. In most cases, correct treatment produces significant long-term relief.
If you have been using desensitising toothpaste for more than 4 weeks without clear improvement, a professional assessment is the better next step.
