Scaling & Polishing

Scaling and Polishing

Scaling and polishing is the process of cleaning your teeth, including the visible portion above the gum line and the area immediately beneath the gum line that your toothbrush cannot reach.
Scaling is a process that removes plaque and calculus (the white or yellow hard deposits that accumulate on your teeth and is not removable by routine brushing).
Polishing refers to the removal of stains and very small particles of calculus.

01. Why Scale and Polish?
To prevent decay- Plaque is a naturally occurring material that forms on the teeth's surfaces. Plaque hardens into calculus or tartar as it accumulates. Bacteria flourish in the fissures created by plaque and calculus and, when paired with food debris, increase the risk of tooth decay. To avert or mitigate the consequences of gum disease- Plaque and calculus, once produced, irritate the gums, causing them to become inflamed. This condition is referred to as gingivitis or gum disease. Your teeth are supported by your gums and jaw bone. If your gums are poor, you risk losing the bone that surrounds your teeth. Your teeth lose their sound foundations and become unable to be retained; they grow loose and eventually fall out or must be pulled. If your gums are more severely infected, a thorough root planing procedure must be performed.
02. How to Scale and Polish?
Scaling and polishing your teeth are performed by the hygienist or dentist using a combination of manual and motorized tools. The hygienist or dentist uses a high-speed brush or rubber cup in conjunction with special cleaning pastes. The debris removed by the dentist or hygienist cannot be eliminated only with a toothbrush and toothpaste. A large amount of water is used to cool the scaling instruments and wash away the debris as it is removed; a suction hose is utilized to remove any excess water during the procedure.
03. Point to note!
Scaling teeth can occasionally be painful, particularly if your gums have receded and the top of the tooth's root is visible. If necessary, the dentist can administer an injection to numb each area of your mouth, thereby reducing sensation. This will, however, take multiple visits to the dental office, as it is not possible to numb the entire mouth in one sitting.
04. The hygienist
Occasionally, the dentist will recommend you to one of our hygienists for a scaling and polish. The hygienist is an expert in this field as well as gum care.
