Toothache

Toothache simply refers to any pain that is felt in or around a tooth which may be caused by: Tooth decay, Abscessed tooth, Tooth fracture, A damaged filling or an Infected gum. This pain could be sharp, throbbing, or constant. In some people, pain only comes when pressure is applied to the tooth. One of the most common cause of toothache is tooth decay. At the early stage of tooth decay there’s usually no pain and that is why it’s very important to visit the dentist by annually for checkup so as to detect/ address dental problem at the early stage to avoid pain.

SOME CAUSES OF TOOTHACHE
  • Tooth decay (Cavities): tooth decay is one of the most common cause of toothache. It is caused by a combination of different factors, e.g. bacteria in mouth, frequent snacking, excess consumption of sweetened soft drinks or juice, and not cleaning the teeth properly (poor oral hygiene) etc.
  • Gum infection: Gum disease refers to bacterial infection and inflammation causing damage to soft and hard tissues supporting the teeth. In the early stage of gingivitis, gums become red, swollen and bleed easily, but the disease is reversible.
  • Abscessed tooth: this is a collection of pus that can form inside the teeth, gums or in the bone that holds the teeth in place. It is caused by a bacterial infection.
  • Tooth fracture (cracked tooth): tooth fracture can occur for a number reasons and can create room for bacterial plaque and food accumulation. It comes with a lot of pain and could be caused by accident, improper use of the teeth e.g using teeth as bottle opener, cracking hard bones etc.
  • Damaged filling: when filling gets damaged, food substances and bacteria makes their way to the openings thereby resulting to pains.

Although some minor toothache might require a simple gaggle with warm salt water. But in a case where the toothache lasts longer than 1 or 2 days, shows symptoms like fever, earache, or pain upon opening the mouth wide, kindly visit the dentist as quickly as possible to avoid further damage to the teeth.
NB: Early stage of cavity might not present with pains, That’s why it’s important to have regular dental checkups and cleanings, even when the mouth feels fine. However, if you experience a toothache or mouth pain, quickly visit the dentist as soon as possible.
