Scale and Polish

Scale and Polish your teeth every 6 months

No matter how well or often you brush and floss, there will always be areas too hard to reach. Scaling and polishing can help get those pearly white properly clean.

Why Do I Need It?

Gum disease is usually caused by a sticky film of bacteria called plaque. Plaque forms on your teeth regularly, therefore must be removed by having a scale and polish done regularly. If not, the bacteria in plaque can cause your gums to become inflamed. When this happens, your gums will pull away from your teeth and form spaces called pockets. Plaque then gets trapped in these pockets and cannot be removed with regular brushing. When untreated, gum disease could lead to bone and tooth loss.

If gum disease is detected early and hasn’t damaged any tissue, a professional scale and polish should do. Besides that, if the pockets between your gums and teeth are too deep, however, scaling and root planning may be needed.

What Happens During a Scale and polish?

Scaling is when dentists remove hardened plaque, cleaning all the way down to the gum margin. Your dentist will then begin polishing out your teeth with prophylactic paste. The scaling and polishing help your gums reattach to your teeth. A scale and polish should be done twice a year.

After Care Tips

After scaling and polishing is done, you will do salt water solution for a week. The therapist/hygienist will tell you how to do it.

Your dentist will schedule another visit to see how healthy your teeth and gums are. If they have gotten healthy or not, more treatment may be needed.

Good dental care at home is essential to help keep gum disease from becoming more serious or recurring.  Brush your teeth twice a day with a medium brush. Clean between your teeth dailyeat a balanced dietavoid using tobacco and see your dentist regularly
